august 13 - Sarah symons
Sarah Symons is author of No Ordinary Joy and Ted Talk Living Heroically. Hear Sarah speak about how she has networked creating prevention programs, shelters, education and vocational training to girls at risk and survivors in India, Cambodia, Nepal and Thailand. Sarah is passionate about building relationships of love, respect and trust with vulnerable women and children, and empowering survivors to be change-makers in their families and communities.
See the Martha's Vineyard premiere of A CIVIL REMEDY, a short documentary film that tells the story of one sex trafficking victim who survived - an American girl who was trafficked into prostitution in Boston at the age of seventeen, escaped to her family, and survived to finish school and become an anti-trafficking advocate.
Conversation with Director/Producer Kate Nace Day, who spent her childhood summers in Woods Hole, will follow. Kate is also a Professor of Law at Suffolk University and Founder of Film and Law Productions. Join Kate to explore the importance of survivors’ stories, the meaning of justice, and the need to place new legal tools in the hands of victims. A civil remedy - a state civil action for money damages - will empower victims to reclaim their equal place in their community, see their violators held accountable, and drain resources from the global sex industry.
Kate has devoted much of her career to to unique law courses which address women in law and women's international human rights. Kate Nace Day is a recipient of the 2018 Women's Bar Association of Massachusetts Lelia J. Robinson Award recognizing excellence in the legal profession and contribution to the community.
